The challenges of talking about sex

Everyone can remember the dreaded day that the had "the talk" with mom, dad or some other adult figure in his or her life. While this conversation may have been illuminating, many of us felt uncomfortable. As an adult, the need to talk about sex with a partner often comes up, and like before, it can be an awkward conversation. Here are some tips on how to bring up the topic and keep the blushing to a minimum.

Before you broach the subject, it may be wise to put your thoughts down on paper. Whether you want to suggest a new routine or discuss the type of condoms you use, it's always best to organize your talking points beforehand. Make a list of everything you want to say so that you'll be fully prepared when the time comes.

Timing is also important when it comes to sex talks. You want to make sure that both you and your partner are as relaxed and focused as possible. It may be best to save the discussion for the bedroom as that is often the place where sex happens. Dinner time is another excellent opportunity, though we wouldn't recommend having a talk about sex while at a restaurant – or anywhere in public for that matter.

Most importantly, be frank. You don't want to have to dance around any issues when talking about sex so be honest when your having the discussion. Listen to your partner and encourage him or her to be open and straightforward as well.

When all is said and done, relax and congratulate yourself. You'll most likely feel a bit of relief once it's all over, so why not celebrate by having a roll in the hay with your partner?
