Sex.com takes Guinness World Record
The domain name "Sex.com" is now in the record books. The web address was named by The Guinness Book of World Records as the most expensive domain name in the history of the internet.
According to Salon.com, Gary Kremen, who founded the dating website Match.com, originally owned the site. It was then passed on to Escom LLC, which went bankrupt in the beginning of 2010. In November of that year, the site was purchased by Clover Holdings for a whopping $13 million.
An article in TechCrunch from last year states that the battle over the domain name lasted for more than a decade, and has spawned two books that discuss the multiple companies vying for the hot web address. The news source reports that to even be qualified to bid on the website name, "bidders must appear at the auction with a certified bank check in the amount of $1,000,000."
A current visit to Sex.com will bring web users to a plain page with links on topics such as dating, personal ads, sex toys, live webcams and car insurance. It remains to be seen if the new owners of the site will do anything to spice it up.
