Dr. Ruth discusses her life as a renowned sexpert
Dr. Ruth Westheimer has been one of the most prominent experts on sex in society. Through television and radio, she has provided the answers to countless questions about safe sex, sexually transmitted infections and relationships. The doctor recently sat down with the Boston Globe to discuss her illustrious career.
When asked why she had been so successful, Dr. Ruth explained that it was a combination of factors – her humor, her straightforward attitude and her recognizable accent.
"So it's been a combination of my taking sex very seriously, being very well trained and not being afraid of speaking up, but without being militant or political about it," she said in the interview.
Ruth also discussed Americans' attitudes toward sex, saying that for many people, the topic is difficult to discuss. She believes part of her success was making gentle suggestions to people – such as encouraging individuals to use a vibrator or to admire their own erections in the mirror.
Indeed, vibrating devices such as the LifeStyles® a:muse™ Personal Pleasure Massager, can spice things up in the bedroom for men and women alike. A 2009 study from two Indiana Universities showed that 53 percent of women and 45 percent of men between the ages of 18 and 60 had used a vibrator during sex.
