The Key to Aging May Be in Bedroom Satisfaction

No one wants to get older, but it seems as though those who have a satisfying sex life may age more gracefully than others. According to researchers from the Stein Institute for Research on Aging at the University of California, San Diego, older women who are sexually satisfied tend to age better.

The key to aging may be in bedroom satisfactionThe study examined more than 1,235 women who had been enrolled in the center since 1993 in order to determine how they age and their levels of sexual satisfaction. Women who were between 60 and 89 were asked on their sexual satisfaction. The results demonstrated that 67 percent of women ages 60 to 69 responded that they were between “moderately” to “very satisfied” with their sex lives. Approximately 60 percent of women ages 70 to 79 and 61 percent of women aged 80 to 89 said the same.

“What this study tells us is that many older adults retain their ability to enjoy sex well into old age,” said Dr. Wesley K. Thompson, assistant professor of psychiatry with the Stein Institute for Research on Aging at the UC San Diego School of Medicine and the study’s co-author. “This is especially true of older adults who maintain a higher level of physical and mental health as they grow older. Furthermore, feeling satisfied with your sex life – whatever your level of sexual activity – is closely related to your perceived quality of life.”

Good sexual health is important for people of any age, and this study may demonstrate just how much individuals in older age brackets depend on being sexually satisfied in order to enjoy life to the fullest.
