‘Captain Condom’ Discusses His Legacy

You may not know Chuck York by name – but it’s almost certain that you’ve seen part of his legacy. The self-titled “Captain Condom” is responsible for a large majority of the condom vending machines found in bathrooms across the nation, according to The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel.

'Captain Condom' discusses his legacyYork, who now owns C&G Manufacturing, began his work with condom vending machines in 1986, during the height of the HIV and AIDS scare. He got the idea for the machines
from a friend who had been working in ski resorts.

“This was when the first AIDS scare was coming out and he thought we should start spreading these machines around the ski areas.” York told the news source. “…People wanted to do something to protect themselves.”

Over the years, Captain Condom has installed machines in countless establishments, including restaurants, theaters, bars, bowling alleys, laundromats and military bases. He also helped sell condoms internationally in areas that are severely affected by AIDS.

The machines are still quite popular. According to The Hindustan Times, condom machines at India’s Games Village sporting event distributed approximately 640 condoms a day to the athletes and their staff.
