Are some men allergic to their own semen?

Dutch scientists recently released a report that suggests around 1 in 100 men may suffer from a condition known as post orgasmic illness syndrome (POIS), which causes them to experience flu-like symptoms after they ejaculate. The illness was first documented in 2002, according to Health24.com.

The symptoms typically occur within seconds or hours of an orgasm, and can last for up to a week. Two new studies published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine indicate that the symptoms are possibly due to the fact that men are allergic to their own semen. Fortunately, there is a treatment for the condition.

"These results are a very important breakthrough in the research of this syndrome," Dr. Marcel Waldinger, who authored the studies, told the news source. He added that the results of his study "contradict the idea that the complaints have a psychological cause."

Before now, there was very little known about POIS. Men who suffer from the condition are likely embarrassed by it, and with little information, they have often not known how to seek out treatment.

Men who are allergic to latex may also have issues during sex. Fortunately, it's easy to purchase condoms that are latex free, such as the LifeStyles® SKYN® condoms.
